oday is inauguration day for President-elect Joe Biden, and to celebrate, his inauguration committee has rolled out augmented reality lenses on Snapchat for voters to snap selfies with to celebrate the transition of power from a distance.

Users can simply open the Snapchat app on selfie mode to try out the lenses. The first lens allows the user to snap a photo of themselves in front of the U.S. Capitol, donned in inaugural garments while confetti falls around them.

Through the Snapchat world view, users can see their face in the inauguration audience as an audio greeting plays from Biden himself. Both lenses are now available on Snapchat.

In a recent statement, Digital Director of the Presidential Inauguration Committee, Christian Tom stated:

"This year’s inauguration has allowed us to create new, innovative, and creative tools for Americans across the country to participate in inaugural traditions and ceremonies while staying home to keep everyone safe,"

Tom continued:

"We are excited for President-elect Biden to share his message around unifying the country with folks on Snapchat and invite them to be a part of this historic inaugural."

The inauguration committee states that “public health and safety concerns” are one of the reasons for creating the lenses, as cases of COVID-19 continue to spike across the country. Security has also been a concern around the U.S. Capitol following the attack on January 6 with measures being tightened.

It is clear that Biden’s committee has made a significant effort to reach the younger generations of voters. Part of the president-elect’s campaign featured a [nofollow]"Build Back Better" map for the video game Fortnite as well as creating [nofollow]online merchandise for the Nintendo Switch hit Animal Crossing: New Horizons and now, Snapchat lenses.
