okid, a China based AR glasses manufacturer, announced the second generation of their Rokid Glass model in January. In a recent press release, Rokid shared that the company had finished mass production and was in the preparations for shipping globally.
The Rokid Glass 2 began production in the second half of 2019 and were officially announced this January. Since that time, pre-orders have arisen around the world, including the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada to name a few.
There’s no wonder fans of the technology are keen to pre-order, the Rokid Glass 2 represents major upgrades, the most notable of which being that the arms of the glasses can now be folded and put away just like a pair of ordinary glasses, making them more transportable and realistic for everyday use.
They also include an AR display thanks to the glasses’ low-power LCOS display screen. Rokid states the glasses are comfortable for the wearer, even after continuous wearing for several hours, thanks to their lightweight design, weighing just 90g.
For power, Rokid Glass 2 comes with a built-in 10,000 mAh battery that allows up to 8 hours of use on a single charge, according to the company. Other features of the AR glasses include:
- Dual microphone active noise reduction;
- Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 ac connectivity;
- 4G and GPS support;
- USB Type-C input.
- Monocular display that offers 40° field of view (FoV) and resolution of 1280×720;
- 9 axis IMU sensor;
- 8 megapixel autofocus camera;
The folding, monocular glasses are designed for multi-use cases within Rokid’s business-to-business market.
Linda Wang, Rokid Public Relations specialist stated:
“All the products we’ve already released are monocular, mainly used for industrial, maintenance and assembly, manufacturing, logistic, exhibition, healthcare markets, and other B2B markets.”
Rokid focused their efforts on making sure the voice-controlled AR glasses are versatile so ensure they are compatible with a large range of external devices, sensors, and computing devices, including smartphones.
While COVID-19 was unheard of when Rokid Glass 2 went into production and only a rumor when the AR glasses first launched, it was a serious reality before production finished.
Midway through the production process, Rokid made the innovative decision to integrate an infrared sensor that can check the temperatures of up to ten people at a time from a safe distance.
The new additional feature has become a major selling factor among medical organisations and the security sector. Specific use cases suggested by Rokid include, event staff and those in education.
Now that the production phase of the Rokid Glass 2 has been completed, they will now start to ship to distributors around the world as well as those who have pre-ordered them. The AR glasses should begin arriving on doorsteps and shelves soon for eager fans of the technology to get their hands on.
Wang went on to say:
“We are working on binocular products used in consumer markets, such as museums, workforces, schools etc… We will be selling both monocular and binocular glasses in the future geared towards different markets.”
It’s clear to see that Rokid still has their eyes on the prize, growing in the less competitive B2B marketplace with plans to eventually move into the consumer space. As we don’t know exactly when this move might occur, it’s definitely something to keep an eye on.
