recent article by the Japanese newspaper [nofollow]Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, claims that Apple is working with Sony on Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technology that would be used in its reported AR headset. It is rumoured that the headset could be announced as early as 2021, the article claims.
Apple blog, [nofollow]Macotakara covered the report, stating that if Sony does supply the AR and VR technology it could be a "pillar of Sony's earnings" over the coming years.
It appears that Sony has received an order for a micro display using an organic EL panel. The display is said to be small in size and lightweight in design and features high image resolution, as well as digital camera viewfinder. AR and VR compatible HMDs for new applications use optical technology to project images displayed on the display onto the lens in front of the user.
The recent article confirms earlier reports from Bloomberg which claimed that Apple were developing two Augmented Reality products, an AR/VR headset, which combines the best of AR and VR to offer impressive gaming and content VR experiences, which could be launched sometime in 2022.
And the Apple Glasses, a sleek and lightweight pair of smart glasses which would focus on utilising Augmented Reality in daily life, using AR to place data like maps navigations over what the user is seeing in the real world. The Apple Glasses are scheduled to launch in 2023.
