oogle has collaborated with Disney and Lucasfilm to create an Augmented Reality experience, featuring the Star Wars Character, Din Djarin -The Mandalorian.
Google recently announced the launch of the new Android Augmented Reality app, The Mandalorian” AR Experience, which showcases the most iconic moments from the first series. Now fans can retrace the Mandalorian’s steps, find the Child, harness the Force and more, according to the app’s Play Store description. Users will be able to interact with the characters and create scenes which can be shared.
There will be 5 new pieces of Augmented Reality content released, continuing for nearly a year to wrap on October 31, 2021
The Mandalorian Augmented Reality experience was made on Google’s AR developers platform, ARCore, to create scenes which interact with the user’s surroundings. To make the experience even more immersive, the app uses Google’s new ARCore Depth API which allows occlusion, making the Augmented Reality blend seamlessly into the environment seen through the Android device’s camera.
As the app was developed using the latest AR technologies, it will not work with all Android devices, only compatible 5G Android devices, including the 5G Google Pixel smartphones and a select number of 5G Android smartphones which have the Google Play Services for AR updated. Google commented that other phones may be supported in the future.
While The Mandalorian Augmented Reality experience requires a 5G capable Android smartphone, Google states that users don’t have to have an active 5G connection to experience the AR. That is because it refers to the technologies these devices include and not the signal itself.
This isn’t the first time that Google and Lucasfilm have teamed up. Over the years the companies have collaborated on several promotional marketing campaigns. These campaigns have given Google and Lucasfilm the opportunity to showcase their technologies and services, many of those including the use of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality content. .
