he VMF is dedicated to artistic and cultural development in Vancouver, connecting art and people in public spaces. Since it was founded in 2016, the VMF has created over 250 public art displays and nurtured the annual Vancouver Mural Festival into becoming one of Canada’s premiere events. Many of the VMF’s exhibits are produced on the traditional unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations.
This year however, the event has become digital. From February 12 to 28, Vancouver’s public spaces will be transformed into an interactive, open-air art gallery with the help of augmented reality technology, to showcase murals by local and international artists.
The exhibition will be presented in collaboration with the Downtown Vancouver BIA and the Vancouver Pride Society, the Vancouver Mural Festival's Winter Arts will feature artists from Vienna, Tokyo, Ho Chi Minh, and Dallas, and 10 local artists from Vancouver, Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil Waututh.
In a recent press release, interim VMF executive director Andrea Curtis stated:
“More than ever, we’ve seen the positive impact that public art and public space brings to communities… This has driven us to harness technology in a way which demonstrates the transformative power of art in our cities.
Curtis continued:
"Until we can reconvene, we will continue creating live experiences in public. We really hope this experiment brings joy and inspiration to everyone downtown and beyond."
Local art enthusiasts can download the VMF mobile app to discover 20 AR artworks during Winter Fest and over 250 murals across the city. You can learn more here.
